What Is Robusta Coffee?

Robusta coffee is one of the two primary species of coffee beans in the world.

The primary species is Coffea canephora or ‘robusta’ to give it its proper name.

This fact is why C. canephora is not used in many higher-quality blends of coffee beans.

Where Is Robusta Coffee Grown?

One of the best features of Robusta beans is their adaptability to different soil types, temperatures, and altitudes.

Unlike Arabica coffee, Robusta is not grown exclusively in a few select countries.

In fact, it can be found growing in many parts of the world around the equator, in the higher altitudes of Central and South America.

Unlike Arabica coffee plants, they can also grow at lower temperatures which makes Robusta easier to grow in many countries around the world.

And most coffee beans produced for robusta beans are grown in the countries listed below.

  • Brazil – Brazil is the largest producer of coffee in the world and has been for many years.
  • Vietnam – Vietnam produces a wide range of coffee beans and it’s no surprise that they also produce good quality robusta beans too!
  • Indonesia – Indonesia produces more robusta coffee than arabica beans! This is because of its high altitude and hot climate.
  • India – India is another exporter of robusta coffee from the world’s third-largest producer of the species. Most of it is used as a filler for other blends and is also sold as instant coffee. However, there are some small-scale specialty robusta coffee farms in India that produce a very high-quality product!

Robusta Coffee Plant

Robusta coffee is the second most widely traded coffee, after arabica. Robusta is primarily grown in Vietnam, Brazil, and India.

Robusta plants are generally lower than arabica plants and can produce fruit with less time between beans on the plant.

Robusta plants also yield significantly more coffee per plant than do arabica plants.

Its smaller size leads to an increased production of cherries compared with other varieties of coffee beans.

Robusta Coffee in Popular Use

Due to the nature of robusta beans, they are often used alongside their milder counterparts in blends for both instant coffee and filter coffees.

Due to its bitter and stronger flavor than Arabica beans robusta coffee tends to be used more for blends than as a single origin.

Arabica coffee tends to have a more floral aroma and flavor whilst robusta has an earthy and almost woody taste to it.

Robusta beans are not as popular as Arabica coffee, but they are gaining ground on their counterparts due to some unique reasons.

One of the reasons is their higher level of caffeine. Robusta coffee beans have about two times more caffeine than Arabica.

Robusta coffee beans are usually mixed with Arabica beans in coffee blends to compensate for the lower level of caffeine.

This is because most coffee drinkers prefer a stronger cup of coffee one that is more stimulating with higher caffeine content.

To cater to this demand, many coffee manufacturers are now selling Robusta beans that are wonderfully roasted and ground to make your own strong blend.

However, this is not the only reason why factories use them in their blends.

Robusta beans are much easier to grow and are therefore cheaper to produce and are much more resistant to pests and do not require as much handpicking as Arabica coffee does.

It is also quite rare to find a blend containing robusta beans that does not use Coffea arabica beans to some extent.

Any blend that is not pure arabica will contain robusta beans as a bulking factor.
